Unfortunately, the treatment costs of private pets cannot be financially supported by official bodies. However, if you find yourself in a personal emergency and your four-legged friend urgently needs medical help, you can contact organizations such as Caritas or the Red Cross and ask for support.

If your pet is in an absolute emergency due to an accident or illness, you can also contact the Austrian Animal Rescue Service.

Important: For people without an apartment, there is the possibility of receiving free services for four-legged friends at the Neunerhaus. All you need is a referral from your Viennese homeless assistance facility.

4. BORROW MONEY

These options are available to you:

  1. Borrow money privately: Ask friends or acquaintances if they can help you out with the vet costs. It's important to make a fixed repayment plan - that way you might find someone who can support you.

  2. Borrow money from the bank: Ask your bank if you can take out a mini loan to pay your vet fees. Alternatively, you could also ask for an increase in your overdraft facility.

  3. Pawning an item: To get the money for the vet immediately, you could also simply pawn an item. Here you can find online rates that can be borrowed for various collateral or your car. The term for pawn loans is always 30 days (or up to 90 days for car pawn loans) and can be extended at any time.

5. CROWDFUNDING

Many people love animals but do not have the opportunity to keep a pet themselves. To get support for keeping your four-legged friend, you also have the following options:

  • Sponsorship: If you have long-term payment problems for the costs of your pet, you could look for a sponsor who would like to (co-)finance it - you can place an advertisement on patensuche.at, for example .

  • Fundraiser: Start a one-off fundraiser if you can no longer afford medical expenses for your four-legged friend. You can tell your story on gofundme.com and ask people for financial support.
